March is Money Month!

There's a choice for the month of March and readers are encouraged and (we hope) inspired by the potential for understanding and empowerment that comes from reading about the world's current economic situation. People can bring their comments and questions as we share the book we chose to read and its perspective on our current history.

"Deep Economy" by Bill McKibben
"In this powerful and provocative manifesto, Bill McKibben offers the biggest challenge in a generation to the prevailing view of our economy. For the first time in human history, he observes, "more" is no longer synonymous with "better"—indeed, for many of us, they have become almost opposites. McKibben puts forward a new way to think about the things we buy, the food we eat, the energy we use, and the money that pays for it all. Our purchases, he says, need not be at odds with the things we truly value."

"Enough: True Measures of Money, Business and Life" by John C. Bogle
"In Enough, Jack Bogle, 'the conscience of Wall Street,' distills his half-century of observations on the capital markets, and on life in general, into a few hundred entertaining pages - required reading for those concerned about their own future, their family's future, and the nation's future." - William J. Bernstein, author , A Splendid Exchange and The Four Pillars of Investing.

"Your Money or Your Life", Vicki Robins and Joe Dominguez with Monique Tilford - see www.yourmoneyoryourlife.info for national press release and further info..

Other books about money for further reference: "The Energy of Money - A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment" by Maria Nemeth and "The Soul of Money" by Lynn Twist

Please share your comments here or meet us at book club to discuss on Feb. 8 from 4-5:15.

thanks!

Here is a blog piece that I submitted to the Carolina Parent blog and I thought I'd include it here too fyi. zan

"Just in time to help us all get through this economic crisis and prepare for future ones with enough and with “financial integrity” (FI), Vicki Robins – one of the original authors - has just published a new edition of, Your Money or Your Life (2008 Vickie Robins & Joe Dominguez with Monique Tilford). This is a must read for those of you who find your selves in a bind now and who want to avoid feeling this way for the rest of your life. So the next time someone asks you: “Your money or your life?” You’ll be able to say: “I’ll take both thank you!”
Originally published in 1992, Joe Dominguez devised this plan to help individuals become savvier about money. This extremely informative and practical guide to personal finance is one of the few books to take you step by step toward a thorough understanding of your relationship with money. Joe worked on Wall Street and retired at the age of 31. Not bad eh? Afterwards he stopped working for money, participated in other types of meaningful work and spent more time with friends and family. Sadly, the world lost Joe in 1997; fortunately, he left behind his recipe for obtaining financial intelligence, financial integrity, and maybe even financial independence (FI3).
When I read this book in the early 90’s I had no idea what I was doing for myself. It is only now after about 15 years of marriage, three children, a move to the U.S. and the loss of our main source of income two and a half years ago that I can tell you with certainty that this book is empowering. Because my husband adopted a lifestyle of conscious spending and attention to values, my husband’s lay-off was the beginning of us understanding what we had “bought” ourselves in terms of financial independence - at least for a couple of years; and so we did come to see this event as “an opportunity”; which is one of the questions the books asks us to consider. No, we’re not financially independent and we do need to keep working. And we have also discovered so much about ourselves: our needs and what “enough” is for us. We have a much better feel for and perspective on our futures in terms of the work we want to do and the lives we want to lead. We now have a better understanding of how long you can make a certain amount of money last. This has all kinds of implications for what we choose to do in the future and what retirement might look like. And for those of us who haven’t got a trust fund sitting in a bank for us somewhere, this kind of learning may only come from experience – experience that we create for ourselves. I invite you to discover the possibilities for yourself. Imagine what 15 years can do for you…
As I realized how much YMOYL had done for us, I got interested in joining the speakers’ group because I want to share this information with everyone I meet! I must also tell you that even when both my husband and I were working, we never made six figures. So the possibility for saving and developing a satisfying lifestyle does not require a big salary. It doesn’t happen overnight and like any big project, it takes patience and perspective, but it can be done and the program can lead to a greater understanding of one’s own path to happiness.
I will be offering at least three workshops over the next few months in Raleigh with a view to creating study groups of people who are interested in exploring and adopting the practice of financial integrity. I am a public educator and lifestyle coach and I love to incorporate this material into my work. What I have noticed about coaching is that some individuals are not ready to move forward with their life because they are stuck – and often this block is related to their financial situation. They feel they “can’t” investigate other possibilities for their lives or entertain their dreams because they are on the proverbial treadmill with out resources to stop, get off and reflect about what they want from their lives. Now you know you have help. I invite you to join me at a workshop, contact me personally, www.simplepractice.net or go to www.yourmoneyoryourlife.info and start looking ahead to a brighter financial future. It’s just as much about your life as it is about your money. Yes you can!"
